Server room design checklist for small and medium organizations

Server room design checklist

A server room doesn’t have to be large or expensive, but it should follow a few basic principles so that costly equipment runs trouble-free for years.

Power and backup power

A UPS sized for the real load, a dedicated power circuit and proper earthing are the first requirements for stability. For servers with two power supplies, connect each supply to a separate power circuit.

Cooling and airflow

The recommended equipment inlet temperature is usually between 18 and 27 degrees Celsius. A hot aisle / cold aisle layout, blanking panels in empty rack spaces and preventing hot air from recirculating make cooling far more efficient.

Racks and cabling

  • Racks deep enough for your servers, with free space for growth.
  • Tidy cabling with both ends of every cable labelled and the ports documented.
  • Separate routes for power and data cables.

Security and monitoring

Don’t forget physical access control, CCTV, temperature and humidity sensors, and fire detection and suppression suitable for electronic equipment. Timely alerts stop many failures before they happen.
